Bureau of Indian Standards Celebrates 78th Foundation Day at Guwahati

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) celebrated its 78th Foundation Day with a grand event at Hotel Radisson Blu, Guwahati today.This occasion marks BIS’s tireless efforts to establish and promote quality standards across the nation, ensuring the safety, reliability, and excellence of products and services.The Foundation Day celebration brought together key stakeholders, dignitaries, industry leaders, and BIS officials to reflect on the Bureau’s achievements and discuss its role in shaping India’s quality landscape. The event featured a series of activities, including keynote addresses, technical presentations, and cultural performances, aimed at highlighting the importance of standards in modern-day industries and consumer welfare.

The event was formally inaugurated with an address by Anuj Swarup Bhatnagar, Deputy Director General (East) of the Bureau of Indian Standards. His address emphasized the critical role that BIS plays in ensuring the quality and safety of products and services in India, as well as its global significance.
Shouvik Chanda, Director & Head of BIS Guwahati, delivered the welcome address, highlighting the contributions of BIS in the region and the progress made in standardization efforts.
Anusuya Dutta Barua, Secretary of the Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs Department, delivered the Chief Guest address, discussing the intersection of quality standards and consumer welfare, and underscoring the importance of BIS in safeguarding public interests.Tapan Deka, ADC, DICC provided valuable insights into how quality standards are contributing to industrial growth and boosting both local and international trade.
Lamsuanlun Tonsing, Joint Director of BIS, presented an overview of the Bureau’s vision, achievements, and future directions, with a focus on how BIS is shaping India’s standards landscape and ensuring its alignment with international standards.
Neeraj Jangra, Quality Head at Genus Power Infrastructure Ltd, and Subir Majumdar, Quality Head at Dalmia Cement Ltd spoke about the role of industry-specific standards in ensuring product reliability and the benefits businesses can gain by aligning with BIS-certified standards. Both also highlighted the importance of the quality assurance plan by the industries which can help in compliance with standards and help in exports also by private sector.
The event also featured a captivating cultural program that celebrated India’s diverse heritage, with performances reflecting the importance of quality and excellence in every aspect of life.
The proceedings concluded with a vote of thanks by Thechano C Ovung, Scientist-D and Joint Director, BIS expressing gratitude to all the dignitaries, participants, and attendees for their valuable contributions to the event’s success.
The 78th Foundation Day of BIS promises to be a landmark event, underscoring the Bureau’s continuous efforts to promote quality and build trust in Indian products and services. The formal proceedings were initiated with the traditional lighting of the lamp, symbolizing knowledge, wisdom, and the start of a new era in standardization.A cultural highlight of the event was the soulful Manak Geet performance by the students of Gopal Boro Higher Secondary School, showcasing the importance of quality standards through music.
