The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush,Sarbananda Sonowal highlighted the success of Assam in organising two successful Yoga Mahotsavs in successive years while highlighting the potential of Assam to become a major Yoga tourism destination in the country. The Union Minister was addressing at the curtain raiser press conference on the eve of 75 days to International Day of Yoga, 2023 “Yoga Mahotsav” to be held at the University playground in Dibrugarh tomorrow.
The Ministry of Ayush is organising the Yoga Mahotsav’ on April 7,2023 to commemorate the 75 days to International Day of Yoga at Dibrugarh University campus. The event will witness participation of major personalities from the Northeast India led by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal,Chief Minister of Tripura, Prof (Dr) Manik Saha,the Deputy CM of Arunachal Pradesh,Chowna Mein,the Deputy CM of Meghalaya,Preston Tynsong, the Union Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Rajkumar Ranjan Singh, the Union Minister of State for Petroleum & Gas Rameshwar Teli.
Ayush Minister Sarbananda Sonowal also reviewed the progresss of the construction work at the Panchakarma block and Pharmacology & Chemistry Lab at the Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI) block here today. The minister told the media persons that both the projects will be completed & dedicated to the nation within 2023. A sapling of Guava was also planted by the Union Minister at the herbal garden within the CARI complex during his visit today.

Speaking on the occasion,Ayush Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal said,It is a moment of great realisation that Assam has successfully hosted two major Yoga Mahotsav in successive years (Sivsagar in 2022 and Dibrugarh in 2023). This highlights the potential that Assam has to become a major centre of spiritual tourism in the region. With the love and support from Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji,the Ministry of Ayush has identified areas of tremendous potential in the state and Yoga is one of them. As you know, like last year,this year, we are organising the 75 day to International Day of Yoga Mahotsav at the University Playground in Dibrugarh tomorrow. I believe the success of these events not only boosts the Yoga as practice in the region but also opens up new vistas of opportunity for the region. Tourism can be one. Another major area of potential, that the Ayush has identified, is the prospect of building up the Ayush system of healthcare in the region. Under the dynamic leadership of PM Shri Narendra Modi ji, we continue to build capacity in the region in the Ayush sector.
Adding further on the Ayush initiatives, the Union Minister of Ayush, Sarbananda Sonowal said, ‘Ayush has a lot of potential in Assam. To realise the potential, a number of steps are being taken including this institution – Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARD in Guwahati – where a separate Panchakarma Block is being built,
along with a Pharmacology & Chemistry building equipped with first of its kind labs in the region. We also want to hone the rich folk medicine of the Northeast. For this, a major survey is being undertaken in all the 8 states whereby making scientific surveys with proper documentations so that our rich folk medicines can be standardised and, after all the necessary steps, make available for treatment of human ailments. This will not only add to the enrichment of lives widely but also open up economic opportunity for the region in the medical and pharmacology sectors.
